I am sure you have, but just in case you haven’t, although i am sure that you have, that is – come across flat-pack furniture. You know the ones; you wander on down to the store and there is the desk that you need, not want, no needful buying but it;s just right. As it is all complete it looks amazing. However you know it comes as a flat-pack and you dutifully wander off to the warehouse part of the store select the correct box(es) and taken it/them home.
On the outside of the box it states ‘Place on a flat surface’ and ‘Open this way up’. You dutifully comply. Next comes a sheet of paper with ‘Instructions’ written across the top and below that ‘Please check that all the pieces/parts are included before beginning to assemble’ and then ‘Please read the instructions carefully.’ So how come one part always ends up either upside-down or back-to-front or when you get to the end there is an extra screw?
One daughter had a desk. A nice little desk. Just the right size for what i needed. So i dutifully coerced a friend to take me to the said shop she had purchased it from and then brought it home. Once home the first daughter and the friend disappear (as if by magic) and daughter number two helps me unpack, check and then assemble the said desk into almost pristine condition. However as always, no matter how many instructions i read or follow there is one piece that is upside-down and back-to-front. It’s nothing. Hardly noticeable, unless you know it’s there. But i know, don’t I? and my daughter knows. I am sure if you ask her she will point the offending piece out.
Haven’t you noticed that life is like a flat-pack but with the instructions missing?
However God has given us all the instructions we need, but a book of instructions are no good to us if we do not read them. So i have been doing some reading and this is what i have come up with so far (it’s a big book, may take a while). God is a very clever person and every time we prayed he could give us the answer without us having to do anything, but would we really learn anything by that, probably not as much as we would do if we took time to study it out first.
Pray – ‘But behold, I say unto you that you must pray always, and not faint, that ye must not perform anything unto the Lord save in the first the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ …’ (2 Ne 32:9)
Study – ‘But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.’ (Doctrine and Covenants 9:9)
Holy Ghost – ‘And by the power of the Holy Ghost, ye shall know the truth of all things’ (Moroni 10:5)
It is important that once we know the answers that we follow the instructions so that no part will be assembled incorrectly.
