A mother’s love knows no bounds. This is a book written by a Mother who knows! Knows what? Knows what it feels like to experience the death of a child.
On the 14th December 2012 Scarlett Lewis wakes her son Jesse with their usual routine, she sings him a song and gives him a kiss on his cheek. She knows that Jesse father, Neil, is scheduled to take Jesse to school and then home with him for the an overnight stay. She has plans to meet up with Jesse and his father at Sandy Nook school the following afternoon to make ‘gingerbread houses’. However what transpired later that day is every mother’s nightmare come true. Jesse along with 19 other children and 6 adults were shot and killed in a frenzied attack by Adam Lanza.
This is one mother’s story of a very brave, little boy who courageous when face to face with a man with a gun, told his friends to ‘run’. By doing so he saved the lives of several of his class mates. This brave soldier died a hero and although the world moves on a mother can never forget her ‘Sweet boy of Joy.’ Scarlett Lewis says ‘Jesse was born brave.’ He was found laying at the side of his beloved teacher, Miss Soto who was also among the dead.
However if you are expecting a book filled with anger and hate you would be sadly mistaken. For within the pages you will certainly find a grieving mother, which there are no words to really describe. But also you see the hope that can come from faith and belief. It is through the love of family and close friends and a belief that love as no bounds, not in this world or in the world to come that sets Scarlett on the road to healing. From her grief Scarlett Lewis is like a phoenix rising from the ashes. From the early days of nightly sleeping pills, so she could block out the horror of what had happened and allow her to sleep, to that one moment before reality hits in the mornings, every morning, morning after morning. To the thoughts of suicide and the decision to live Scarlett brings hope.
Her hope come through her knowledge that death is not the end and life is eternal and that Jesse is continuously gives her signs that he is near. From a message left by Jesse just before his death – ‘Norturing helin love’ – comes Scarlett’s desire to create a foundation based on love and compassion. Scarlett and Jesse’s message has become one of changing thoughts of anger and hate to one of love. It is Scarlett’s belief that Jesse wants the children to know that they can change their thoughts and their actions from ones of hate to ones of love and compassion. The foundation can be accessed here.
As i have sat rereading what i have written i have tried to rewrite some of the wording, adding, taking away and each time i have tried to do everything i changed just changed back again, what i have written is enough it seems. I feel extremely blessed and grateful to have been given the opportunity to read and review this book. There is promise of hope, of healing and even a better future. My prayers go out to all those mother’s who today will begin their journey.
This book is for the Mother’s who know! It is also for the sister’s of the mother’s who know because that’s me!
